We are looking at 3 vendors for web filtering, Postini, Barracuda, Symanted Endpoint. I would appreciate informaiton/feedback on these products, good and bad.

Hi, Jerry! I just wanted to share with you some reviews Banktastic members have added for Barracuda within our community’s vendor’s section. They seem to be a good choice – click here to see the reviews.
No reviews have been shared about Postini or Symantec thus far. Maybe that’s a sign? :)

Jerry, we have seen all of these in banks we work with and what I have found one size does not fit all but these 3 are pretty well known. Depending on what you are doing for 24/7 monitoring, I lean toward an outsourced solution that includes web filtering. I have also recommended this article to several that would have more details.

Jerry, we currently use a UTM appliance for web filtering (Juniper Netscreen) and have found it doesn’t meet the needs of our organization. The Barracuda device strikes me as similar, though it does integrate with AD. In my company, we’ve found the lack of reporting, and therefore low chance of being caught abusing the privilege, correlates with much higher non-business use. I’m planning a trial of the iPrism from St Bernard Software. We use Symantec Endpoint Protection, and I’m not aware of this functionality. I agree with Henry about using a service provider for this functionality, though it may come at a higher price. JP

Jerry, I haven’t used and of the 3 for web filtering. We do have 2 other devices from Barracuda and they perform really well are easy to administer and have a lot of reporting features. For web filtering we are using a iPrism from St. Bernard (same one JP mentions he is trying). We’ve had a couple of of small issues, but they always seem to resolve them with updates fairly quickly. The reporting and grouping of people and AD integration is good.

We used Surf Control, which is now Web Sense, for our content filtering. We are very happy with the product. One thing to look out for is the ability to pull reports by user in a Citrix environment (if you are using Citrix). Make sure whatever product you look at can do this.
As an aside, we use Postini for our SPAM filtering service and couldn’t be happier. We would definitely consider them for content filtering if we didn’t already own the licenses for Web Sense.
